Want a fast and easy way to make shapes in Adobe Illustrator? Then check out my Quick Tip below on how to use the Shape Builder Tool! It will make your life so much easier.
The Shape Builder Tool
<——– It looks like this!
The Shape Builder Tool is the icon in your tool panel that looks like two circles with a dotted line going through them. Let’s say you placed a rectangle over a circle and you want to trim the rectangle to fit inside the circle. Here is how you do it:
- Make sure the shapes you want to edit are all selected. You can do this by dragging your cursor over the shapes.
- Once the shapes are selected, select the Shape Builder Tool from the tool panel.
- Now, hold down the “option” key on your Mac or the “alt” key on your PC (you HAVE to hold down this key or it won’t work) and drag your cursor over the parts you want to trim off.
That’s it! This tool also works with paths too, so if you want to fit a squiggly line you just drew with the pencil tool into a circle, you would follow the same steps. I typically expand the strokes once I get them where I want them before I use the Shape Builder Tool.
